Abdominoplasty

Abdominoplasty, or “tummy tuck,” is a cosmetic procedure designed to firm and smooth the skin of the stomach. Diet and exercise can determine well the abdomen looks, however, the abdominal region sometimes becomes refractory the common techniques.  The desired result can be extremely difficult, or impossible, to achieve. For women, after having children, the pregnancies can leave the abdominal region loose and unresponsive to diet and exercise. An abdominoplasty is best suited for both women and men who desire a smoother, flatter stomach.  The best candidates are in somewhat good shape prior to considering the procedure.

Some patients will benefit more so from a mini abdominoplasty or liposuction than from a full abdominoplasty. Mini abdominoplasty is able to achieve a flatter stomach if a patient is dissatisfied with the area below the navel (belly button).  Depending on the patient’s skin elasticity and muscle tone, liposuction instead of an abdominoplasty may be more appealing should pregnancy be in future plans.
Abdominoplasty is commonly performed as an outpatient procedure, without the need for an overnight stay.  Excess skin and fat are removed, and often, a new navel (belly button) is created.  Often, the muscles underneath are tightened, to further enhance the patient’s shape.

Although results are immediately evident, it will take a few months before the final result of an abdominoplasty is fully realized. The scars from the surgical procedure will fade with time, but they will never fully go away. The scars are positioned such that they lie within the bounds of clothing and swimsuits.  The positive results of a visibly flatter, smoother, well-toned waistline are a worthwhile investment for women and me alike.
