Breast Lift

With time and factors such as gravity, pregnancy, and breastfeeding, a woman's breasts may begin to sag. The skin can lose its elasticity, and the breasts' firmness, volume, and shape can change. In some cases, the sagging or loss of volume is quite pronounced; in other cases, only a slight lift is needed to return the breasts to their original shape.

There are several versions of breast lift — or mastopexy — procedures, with differing incisions and techniques used. Breast Lift Procedure

A breast lift is not a "lunchtime" type of procedure. It's normally done under general anesthesia, with the patient fully sedated and unconscious, although it is possible to have a breast lift done with lighter anesthesia. Breast lift surgeries usually last from 1-1/2 to 3-1/2 hours.

In most breast lift procedures, the excess stretched-out skin and tissue are removed from the breast, and the remaining skin and tissue are re-sutured in place to literally lift the breast. The differences in breast lift surgeries are often based on the type of incision made to remove the skin. There will be a scar after a breast lift procedure, but the scar won't show under a bra.

Combination Lift and Other Procedures

Other surgical procedures can sometimes be performed at the same time as a breast lift surgery, such as breast augmentation, breast reduction, breast reconstruction, and nipple reduction. Candidates for Breast Lift Surgery

A woman who is healthy and who has sagging of the breasts may be a candidate for a breast lift. Women who are planning to have and/or breastfeed a child may want to wait until after to have a breast lift.
