Butt Augmentation

Many women and men would like their buttocks to have a fuller, rounder shape. A flat or droopy posterior may not match the rest of a person's physique, and it may not offer the sensuous curves that many people find most attractive. In addition, a person with a too-small posterior may have trouble finding clothing that fits well.

Moreover, in today's fitness-conscious world, many people are finding that when they've lost a significant amount of excess weight, the silhouette of their buttocks has changed to a flattened, less-curvaceous version of its former self. All of these factors have contributed to the rising popularity of "butt augmentation," a group of plastic surgery procedures designed to give the buttocks a rounder, fuller contour.

Butt Augmentation Procedures

A person's buttocks can be augmented (filled out, made larger) in a number of different ways, essentially by either injecting his or her own purified fat cells into the buttocks, or by inserting implants made of soft silicone gel. Each method has its own pros and cons, which can be discussed during your consultation.

Augmentation with Donor Fat Cells

The fat-injection technique for butt augmentation is commonly known as "the Brazilian butt lift" due to its early popularity in Brazil, a country where full, curvaceous buttocks are seen as a sign of youth and beauty. The Brazilian butt lift procedure entails three steps:

  • Removal of donor fat cells
  • Fat cell purification
  • Microinjection of the donor fat cells into the buttocks

First, fat cells are removed from areas on the patient's body where excess fat can be removed. This step is called "liposelection," a low-pressure, gentle type of liposuction. The back, thighs and abdomen are common areas for liposelection.

The fat cells are then medically purified to isolate only the viable fat cells. Only a fraction of the highly purified fat cells that were removed will qualify for injection into the buttocks.

The purified cells are then injected into the buttocks at many sites, with special microinjection tools that will evenly disperse the fat into the desired areas. Natural feeling and looking buttocks can be achieved with careful injection of the patient's own fat. Once the fat cells have a good blood supply, they will remain in place for the patient's lifetime.

Augmentation with Implants

If a patient does not have enough excess body fat for a fat injection procedure, butt implants may be an option. For a butt augmentation with implants, a small incision is made between the buttock cheeks, and the two implants are inserted. The incision is then closed, and the result is a rounder, more prominent set of buttocks.

Sometimes a combination of butt implants and fat injection are used to complete a patient's new contour.

After Butt Augmentation

After a butt augmentation procedure, a patient cannot sit directly on his or her buttocks for two weeks. A special post-surgical garment must be worn for a few weeks to control swelling. Normal activities may be resumed at about four weeks after the augmentation procedure.
