Sometimes even the most disciplined regimen of diet and exercise isn’t enough to eliminate stubborn pockets of fat. Liposuction, also called lipoplasty, is ideal for helping individuals who are at a normal weight get rid of localized areas of unwanted fat—around the abdomen, for instance, or upper arms, hips, thighs, knees or buttocks.
In recent years, there have been significant advances in the field of plastic surgery, particularly with regard to liposuction. A person undergoing a liposuction procedure today may benefit from various new techniques including the tumescent technique, ultrasound-assisted lipoplasty (UAL), and the super-wet technique.
Even the most innovative liposuction procedures still require the use of the basic liposuction technique — the use of a device called a cannula, which is inserted through a small incision into the layers of fat beneath the skin to suction the fat out. The UAL technique uses a special cannula that emits ultrasonic energy to explode and liquefy fat cells. This makes the fat easier to remove.
This technique involves the injection of large amounts of anesthetic fluid into the fatty tissues. The swollen (“tumesced”) tissues allow for ease of fat removal with a cannula. One of the benefits of this technique is it often results in less bruising and minimizes the risk of blood loss.
The super-wet technique, like the tumescent technique, also involves the injection of fluid into the fatty tissues. However, the amount of liquid used is often much less.
Liposuction procedures vary depending on technique used, anesthesia requirements and various other factors including the size of the area being targeted and the amount of fat to be removed. Generally, a liposuction procedure can take anywhere from one to five hours to complete.
Patients should expect to see results soon after their liposuction procedure, even though it may take up to three months for the swelling to fully dissipate.
