Thigh lift and contouring procedures have been performed on thousands of patients in the United States. Oftentimes, thigh lift and contouring procedures are performed on patients who have lost a significant amount of weight—such as those who have had bariatric, or gastric bypass surgery. When a person loses a lot of weight, sometimes the skin of the thighs will droop. No amount of exercise or dieting will make all of the extra skin go away. In a thigh lift and contouring procedure, this excess skin and other tissue is removed for a firmer, more slender contour.
In other patients, factors contributing to loss of tone in the thighs include aging, fluctuation in body weight, gravity, loss of skin elasticity, or a combination of these effects.
With a thigh lift and contouring surgery, the skin of the thighs can be made to more closely fit the underlying thigh muscles, with a tighter, natural look. In many cases, a thigh lift and contouring procedure will enable a patient to wear clothing that is several sizes smaller than his or her pre-surgery options.
If you have completely finished a weight loss plan and have a significant amount of excess skin over your thighs, you may be an appropriate candidate for a thigh lift and contouring procedure. If weight loss is not the reason for your thigh lift, you may still be a candidate; you can discuss your options with Dr. Vela in a private consultation. If you are planning a significant weight loss or a pregnancy, it may be best to postpone your thigh lift and contouring until afterward to optimize your results.
A thigh lift and contouring surgery takes between three and six hours to perform, depending in part on how much skin and tissue is to be removed. The surgery is done under general anesthesia. You will need to do an overnight stay in a medical facility, and the recovery period includes two weeks of rest. Some bruising and swelling can be expected.
In a thigh lift and contouring surgery, incisions can be made over the inner thighs or hidden in the creases between the groin and the top of the thighs. Outer thigh lift incisions may be made from the groin around to the back. These incisions won't be visible when you wear a swimsuit.
After an incision is made, the skin and fat are lifted from the underlying muscles. The excess skin, tissue and fat are removed, and the skin is redraped over the muscles. Surgical drains (slender rubber tubes) may be placed temporarily to help drain away fluid that accumulates after the surgery. The incisions are carefully closed, with minimization of scars a high priority. Following the placement of sterile dressing, a compression garment must be worn to support the legs' healing and limit the bruising and swelling.
